Athens State Announces Its Annual Flag Day Ceremony

Athens, Ala. - Athens State University will be hosting its annual Flag Day Ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association on Friday, June 12 at noon in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.  A free hot dog luncheon will follow.  Major General (retired) Vincent Boles will serve as this year’s speaker.

Boles served as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G4 on the Army Staff in the Pentagon, where he oversaw Logistics Operations and Readiness for the 1.1 million Soldier force to include the surges into Iraq and Afghanistan. Retiring in 2009 to Huntsville, Alabama, he established Vincent E. Boles, Inc. A leadership and logistics consulting practice. Where he works with organizations around the world to ensure their “best gets better”

Boles is the author of “4-3-2-1 Leadership…What America’s Sons and Daughters Taught Me on the Road from 2d Lieutenant to 2 Star General”, a recent review of the book stated: “He didn't write this book exclusively for the military audience and he does us all a great service by putting these leadership lessons into one volume and sharing them”

In 2011 Boles was inducted in the US Army Ordnance Corps and Niagara University  ROTC Halls of Fame. His military decorations include 2 awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, 3 awards of the Bronze Star Medal, and the Legion of Merit.

Boles has a Masters in Business Administration from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Music for the event will be provided by the Athens State University Community Band under the direction of Dan Havely.

Athens State Business Professor Honored at U of A’s Honors Day Convocation

ATHENS, Ala. - Kim Roberts, Assistant Professor of Operations Management in Athens State’s College of Business was selected as the 2015 Outstanding Research Student in Instructional Technology at The University of Alabama.  The award was presented at the institution’s College of Education’s annual Honors Day Convocation on April 3rd.

Roberts states, “I would like to use my studies to help achieve my teaching vision mission statement of preparing students to be successful, problem-solving business professionals who value lifelong learning.” 

Roberts is a PhD candidate at the University of Alabama in Instructional Leadership with concentration in Instructional Technology program.  She completed 63 hours of doctoral coursework with a 4.0 GPA and is currently working on her dissertation on the efficacy of electronic textbooks.  

“Dr. Roberts is an exemplary faculty member and mirrors the ethos of the academic community at Athens State,” remarks Athens State President Bob Glenn.  “Her success at the University of Alabama is certainly evident in the popularity of her classes with our student body.”

Roberts was also selected as a recipient of the 2015 Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award, presented by the Office of Research on Teaching in the Disciplines in the College of Education at The University of Alabama.  The goal of this award was to recognize exemplary teachers for their outstanding efforts in making learning engaging, interactive, and memorable for students.  Its intent is also to acknowledge the impacts teachers have on students’ lives, their discipline, and the teaching profession.  

For this award, Roberts submitted a lesson plan involving application of operations management topics in a local business setting, where students collaborated with their classmates and the business owner to develop improvement opportunities in areas such as strategy, capacity management, and process analysis.  

“This is a practice many faculty members in Athens State’s College of Business use to engage students,” says Roberts.  “I’m very fortunate to be able to work with and learn from the top-notch faculty we have here at Athens State.”

Athens State’s Athenian Players to present Modern American One Acts

ATHENS, Ala. - The Athenian Players of Athens State University present productions of a grouping of modern American one act plays by Susan Gaspell and Eugene O’Neill.  The plays will include “Trifles” and “The Outside” by Glaspell, and “The Web,” “Before Breakfast,” and “The Rope,” by O’Neill.     These vignettes, directed by Assistant Professor of Drama Dr. Hugh Long, will be held in McCandless Hall on the Athens State Campus.

Gaspell was as an American Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, actress, novelist, and journalist who is known to have composed nine novels, fifteen plays, over fifty short stories. O'Neill was the first American dramatist to regard the stage as a literary medium and the first U.S. playwright to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Performances will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 16, 17, and 18 and Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 23, 24, and 25 at 7:30 p.m.  A matinee performance will be held on Sunday April 19 at 2:00 p.m.  Admission will be charged at the door and is $10.00 per person, $7.00 for students and seniors.

Dr. Kimberly Jack will design costumes; Tracy Szappan will serve as Stage Manager; and Victoria Cochran as Technical Director.

Athens State Art Students Take Top Prized in State Contest

Decatur, ALA. – Winners have been announced in a statewide 2015 Ability Counts Poster Competition sponsored by The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. For the second year in a row the top three awards in the Postsecondary Division will be presented to Athens State University art department students.

Receiving 1st Place in the Postsecondary Division was Allen Meeks. 2nd Place was awarded to Patricia Jones. 3rd Place went to Drew Davidson. All three students will receive cash prizes, are juniors, and are Art majors with a graphic design track.

The purpose of this competition is to reward artistic ability and to promote awareness of the talents that people with disabilities bring to the job market.  This year's theme was: Expect. Employ. Empower.

"Every student enrolled in the course completed an entry to the competition as part of the course lessons, " said Pamela Keller, Professor of Art at Athens State who taught the students in her  Adobe Illustrator Design course. "These are three outstanding examples of poster design and reflect the overall high quality of every member of the class."

The Athens State University art department is housed in the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur, Alabama.

Decatur, AL – A groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II of the Alabama Center for the Arts (ACA) is planned for this Thursday, July 10 at 10:00 at the arts center, located at 133 Second Avenue in downtown Decatur. The new addition will house the theater and music departments of the collaborative academic effort between Calhoun Community College and Athens State University, and is enhanced by support from the City of Decatur and the Morgan County Commission.

LIVE Design Group from Birmingham has been selected as the architect for the project. The $13.5M Phase II building will be adjacent to but separate from the Phase I portion of the ACA and will encompass approximately 44,000 square foot.

Athens State Students Assist with United Way Project

            ATHENS, Ala. - As a project for the Fall 2013 semester under the direction of Dr. Adam Lewis, the Athens State University Computer Science capstone students developed a publicly accessible online volunteer registration portal for the United Way.  The system also gives United Way employees access to be able to manage the information that is entered and to react in a way to quickly identify and place those volunteers.

            The capstone student for the Spring 2014 semester, under the direction of Professor Katia Mayfield, continued to work on the initial development that had been conducted.  There were some tweaks made to the existing database and online forms, along with setting up the United Way office with a back-up plan to still be able to conduct their work off line in case of a disaster and where internet was not available, the students also conducted a full re-design to the Limestone-Athens United Way website.

            The Computer Science department worked closely with United Way Executive Director Kaye Young McFarlen and Volunteer Administration Manager Anna Beth Thomason during the process.

            “Without the ability to register and track spontaneous volunteers on the web or in person our ability as a community to respond to the tornado would not have been as smooth,” remarked McFarlen.  “This work has created an invaluable tool to help respond to emergencies in our community”

            Mayfield added, “We want to thank Anna Beth and Kaye who took time out of their schedules to work with our students and allow them to have had this experience to fully develop a working product that benefits a great organization and the community.”

Athens State Education Professor Recognized for Course Development

ATHENS, Ala. - Athens State University Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Development Darlene Turner-White was recently awarded the 2014 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Exemplary Courses for the development of her Professional Education Communication class. Turner-White joins a select group of educators and course designers from around the world whose courses have earned the Exemplary Course designation.

The Blackboard Catalyst Awards program annually recognizes and honors innovation and excellence in the Blackboard global community of practice, where teachers and learners work every day to redefine what is possible when leveraging technology.

Athens State Faculty Group Honors Jerry and Jill Bartlett

ATHENS, Ala. - The Athens State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has donated two seats in the newly remodeled McCandless Hall to honor President Emeritus Jerry Bartlett and to memorialize his late wife Jill.

“We wanted to do something special for our former colleague, and in turn remember his wife whom he recently lost,” stated AAUP President Mark Durm. “The couple spent so many hours in McCandless that we feel that naming two seats in the auditorium for them would be a very appropriate move.”

Durm will host a ceremony to announce the donation at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 5 in the Classroom Building on the Athens State campus. The public is invited.

Heritage Children’s Chorale to Perform in McCandless Hall

Athens, ALA. - The Heritage Children’s Chorale will perform in the newly renovated McCandless Auditorium at Athens State University on Sunday, May 18th at 3:00pm. This year concert is entitled “We’ve Learned to Sing, So Now We Sing.”



The concert is free and open to the public and the performance is sponsored by Athens State’s Livingston Concert Lecture Series.


The Heritage Children’s Chorale is one of the Southeast’s leading children’s professional choirs. The group is made up of two chapters, the Alabama Chapter which rehearses each at First United Methodist Church and the Tennessee Chapter which rehearses at First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski.


The Chorale is directed by Mary Stephenson and accompanied by Canna Ricketts and Pat Woolard. It offers children an opportunity to study a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to contemporary including both religious and secular anthems. The focus for the Chorale is that the children grow to understand the fundamentals of music and more importantly that each child recognize the importance of music in daily living and the wonderful gift of being able to share this talent.

Athens State Hosting Panel Discussion on Leadership Skills in Changing Times

ATHENS, ALA. - Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning and Coleman Center for Religious Studies and Ethics will present a forum entitled Shooting the Rapids: Leading in a time of change. The forum will be held on Tuesday, April 29 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Center for Lifelong Learning located at 122 S. Marion Street in downtown Athens. There is a $25 charge for admission.

The forum will address how to lead in a fast-moving and constantly changing environment. It will explain how providing leadership during such times is similar to learning to shoot the rapids by navigating shifting obstacles and barriers.

Guest panelists include Retired Redstone Arsenal Lt. General James Pillsbury, United Way Executive Director Kaye Young McFarland, Athens State President Bob Glenn, and Limestone County Economic Development Association Executive Director Tom Hill.

Athens State Alum in Education Received New Teacher Award

ATHENS, Ala. - Kiley Soule, a recent Athens State University Education graduate, received the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers from the National Science Teachers Association (NTSA). Soule is in her first year of teaching science at New Century Technology High School in Huntsville.

The award consists of up to $1,000 to be used to attend the annual National Conference. This year’s conference was held in Boston. Recipients were invited to attend a variety of workshops and presentations that were of particular interest to new teachers at the annual National Conference.

“As a first year teacher, I already know that I have so much to learn still about many things involving the classroom, assessments, literacy, and integrating technology,” stated Soule. “Most of these things will come with time and exploration. Over the 3 days, I attended 7 sessions ranging from general education information to technology integration to literacy and assessments.”

This prestigious annual award is only received by 25 educators throughout the nation and provides selected K-12 teachers in their first five years of teaching with funds to attend the annual National Conference on Science Education. Award recipients will be mentored, tracked, and provided with continuing opportunities for meaningful involvement with NSTA and its activities.

 for Interdisciplinary Exhibition

ATHENS, Ala. – Students in Athens State University’s Advanced Microscopy and Digital Imaging course will be hosting a morning reception to show their artwork on Tuesday April 15th at 10:00 a.m. on the first floor of Waters Hall. Waters hall is located on the main campus of Athens State University.

The displayed images have been taken through one of the several kinds of microscopes in the Biology lab at Athens State and altered in the Photoshop lab on the campus of the Alabama Center for the Arts. The collaborative effort has produced stunning art imagery.

The exhibition will be on view for one week. The show and the reception are free and open to the public.

Athens State Hosting Henri’s Notions for St. Patrick’s Day Concert

Henri's Notion

ATHENS, Ala. – The Livingston Concert Lecture Series at Athens State University is sponsoring a free concert by Henri’s Notions, regarded as the South’s premier Celtic band. The concert will be held on Monday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center. The event is free and open to the public, no reservations are required.


From soft fingerpicked ballads to hard-driving jigs and reels, Henri's Notions creates a musical mix of traditional Celtic and American music as well as their own compositions that have a rhythm and voice reflective of their Southern heritage, which lends a pleasing familiarity to the music. The Notions draw from a broad palette of melodious sounds: the ardent sounds of fiddle, lilting flute, keen tin whistles, all played over the resonant tones and drive of the rhythm section, consisting of acoustic guitars, percussion, and bass.


Lead voices dance through the intricate embellishments that bring to life the old ballads and songs and all members lend voices frequently creating close, rich, well-balanced harmonies. The group makes a point to provide backgrounds on the songs and instruments used during their performance and this has allowed Henri's Notions to connect with, educate and inspire audiences for over twenty years!


Henri's Notions has toured extensively in the Southern and Eastern United Stated from West Palm Beach, Florida and Dallas, Texas to New York City. The group has worked countless festivals and concerts and has appeared with such folk icons as Bob Dylan, Richie Havens, The Kingston Trio, David Grisman Quintet and top Celtic acts such as The Tannahill Weavers, Patrick Street, Paddy O'Brien, Brian McNeill and others.


Henri’s Notions performs year-round in concerts, festivals, special events, and school programs. As a touring member of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Southern Arts Federation, grants are often available to eligible presenters.

Sims-deGraffenried Named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year at Athens State

ATHENS, Ala. - At a reception prior to their annual meeting on February 28, the Athens State University Alumni Association recognized Dr. Sandra Sims-deGraffenried by awarding her the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Sims-deGraffenried is a strong advocate for the University and has boldly shared her love for the institution with alumni, state officials and the community. She earned not only her bachelor’s degree but also her master’s degree from the University in 1970.

Sims-deGraffenried led a very public career as Executive Director of the Alabama Association of School Boards. She was known for her hard work and dedication to the issues most important to school boards and the communities they represented.

In 2012, Dr. Sims-deGraffenried was nominated to serve on the newly created Athens State University Board of Trustees. Her fellow trustees recognized her work and understanding of educational issues and elected her the first chair pro tempore under the new governance.
Vice President for University Advancement Rick Mould has long worked with Sims-deGraffenried on legislative issues for Athens State. In his introduction of her he remarked, “Sandra is passionate about Athens State University. She loves this institution and is dedicated to it. We are all proud of her

and her accomplishments in serving education. Tonight we recognize her and in this small way say thank you for representing our University so well. ”

Athens State President Bob Glenn presented Sims-deGraffenried with a framed proclamation from Alabama Governor Robert Bentley commending her for her career in education and her advocacy for the state institution. Glenn read the proclamation to the reception attendees.

Sims-deGraffenried is a native of Hartselle, Alabama and currently resides in Orange Beach and Huntsville.

Athens State Takes Top Awards at the State Poster Competition

ATHENS, Ala. - The first, second and third place Post-secondary Division winners in the statewide Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services 2014 “Ability Counts” Poster Competition are all from the Athens State University Art Department. Rachel Monroe was awarded first prize, Autumn Letson took second place and Megan Graves received third place. All are students in the Graphic Design track in the Art Department at Athens State University.

The purpose of this competition is to reward artistic ability and excellence, and to promote awareness of the talents that people with disabilities bring to the job market. This year’s theme is “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task”.

“Our students did a tremendous job of working creatively and professionally with this task, “ said the student’s instructor, Pamela Keller, Professor of Art for Athens State University at the Alabama Center for the Arts in Decatur, Alabama. “ Students in the Advanced Graphic Design class enter this competition annually and because we have top quality students, we usually do have one or two posters place in the awards but this is the first year we have taken all three competition prizes. We are

extremely proud of the talent in our students and their level of ability.”

The competition prizes for the Post-secondary division are 1st place - $300, 2nd place - $200 and 3rd place - $100. The winners will be recognized at an upcoming awards luncheon in Montgomery.

Recent Athens State Alum Receives
New Teacher Grant from Alabama Power

 

ATHENS, Ala. – Sara Arzman, a 2013 graduate of Athens State’s College of Education and a teacher at McDonnell Elementary in Huntsville, was one of twelve first-year teachers in Alabama schools have to receive a $1,000 grant for classroom materials and supplies from the Alabama Power Foundation. Arzman was nominated by the faculty of the College of Education, as one of the most promising graduates of 2013.

The Alabama Power Foundation awards more than 1,000 grants annually with non-ratepayer money and has assets of more than $120 million, making it one of the largest corporate foundations in the state. The foundation funds The Alabama Power Foundation has given more than $135 million through more than 20,000 grants and scholarships.

Grant candidates were submitted by the state’s public teacher colleges. Winners were selected by a committee that included education school deans. Each winner graduated from a state-approved teacher program at an Alabama public college or university.

Arzman was recommended for the grant award by Assistant Professor of Education Tedi Gordon. In

her recommendation letter Gordon states, “Although a good pedagogic background is imperative, Ms. Arszman has the ability to communicate a love of learning and make connections to daily life. She possesses organizational skills as well as the ability to access and effectively use available resources in her efforts to make learning accessible for students.”

Athens State Business Student Receives Scholarship from International Organization

               

                ATHENS, Ala. - Athens State University College of Business student Julie Dobbins is the recipient of the North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA) Scholarship for the current academic year.   She was recognized at the NAITA Annual Meeting on February 7 at a luncheon held at the Westin Hotel in Huntsville.  

                Dobbins is seeking her Business Management major and International Business minor.  Julie hails from Gadsden Alabama and was awarded this honor based upon her exceptional academic record while at Athens State University.   She was notified of the award by the NAITA Executive Director Anne Burkett in January. 

                “It is always a good thing when our students are recognized for the exemplary work they are doing,” states Dr. Tom Pieplow, Athens State’s Department Chair of Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management and a member of the NAITA Senior Advisory Board.  “Julie works very hard at her studies and will undoubtedly be successful in any area of International Business. She is a budding superstar and I look forward to her moving into a professional career and demonstrating her abilities.”

                The NAITA Scholarship is administered through the Athens State University Foundation and has strict guidelines that must be met for its award.   It pays out $1,000 per year (two semesters) for those who receive it and is payable towards tuition and books.
