Athens State Announces Its Annual Flag Day Ceremony


Athens, Ala. - Athens State University will be hosting its annual Flag Day Ceremony sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association on Friday, June 12 at noon in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.  A free hot dog luncheon will follow.  Major General (retired) Vincent Boles will serve as this year’s speaker.

Boles served as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G4 on the Army Staff in the Pentagon, where he oversaw Logistics Operations and Readiness for the 1.1 million Soldier force to include the surges into Iraq and Afghanistan. Retiring in 2009 to Huntsville, Alabama, he established Vincent E. Boles, Inc. A leadership and logistics consulting practice. Where he works with organizations around the world to ensure their “best gets better”

Boles is the author of “4-3-2-1 Leadership…What America’s Sons and Daughters Taught Me on the Road from 2d Lieutenant to 2 Star General”, a recent review of the book stated: “He didn't write this book exclusively for the military audience and he does us all a great service by putting these leadership lessons into one volume and sharing them”

In 2011 Boles was inducted in the US Army Ordnance Corps and Niagara University  ROTC Halls of Fame. His military decorations include 2 awards of the Distinguished Service Medal, 3 awards of the Bronze Star Medal, and the Legion of Merit.

Boles has a Masters in Business Administration from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Music for the event will be provided by the Athens State University Community Band under the direction of Dan Havely.

"This has become a very-much anticipated annual event,” says Lisa Payne chairperson of the Flag Day Committee.  “We look forward to hearing from Major General Boles and taking part in this day that celebrates our flag.”

Athens State Community Band Spring Concert Announced


Athens, ALA. - The Athens State University Community Band under the direction of Dan Havely will present its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 27 at 3:00pm in the Carter Gymnasium on the Athens State campus.

“We are looking forward to another great concert,” states Havely. “As we have now surpassed our tenth year together as a band, the concerts we perform throughout the year are a great way for us to express our love for all types of music. I applaud each and every member of the band – and our audiences - for their loyalty, talent and their perseverance.”

Athens, Ala. - The Athens State University Community Band, under the direction of Dan Havely, is
gearing up for their annual Christmas Concert. The concert will be held in the Carter Gymnasium on Pryor Street on the northern border of campus.

The concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 8th at 3:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public courtesy of the Livingston Concert Lecture Series with no reservations required.
A reception, hosted by the Athens State Alumni Association and the Athens-Limestone Hospital, will be held following the afternoon performance in the gymnasium.

Athens State Community Band Spring Concert to Host Jenny Maclay
The Spring Concert will celebrate the groups 10th anniversary

Athens, ALA. - The Athens State University Community Band, currently celebrating its 10th year under the director of Dan Havely, will present its Spring Concert on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00pm in the Carter Gymnasium on the Athens State campus.   

At this year’s concert, the Community Band will proudly be accompanied on select songs by Jenny Maclay, a 2008 graduate of Sparkman High School.

 Maclay is quickly establishing herself as a concert soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. Maclay has achieved a number of notable musical honors, including selection as a semi-finalist and finalist for such international competitions as Astral Artists and Concert Artists Guild.   Most recently, she was the first prize winner of the 2013 National Federation of Music Clubs Orchestral Winds Regional Solo Competition and will be competing at the national level this spring. 

Maclay made her solo debut at the age of 15, as first prize winner of the Huntsville Symphony Young Artist Competition.  She is a Vandoren Regional Artist and performs exclusively on Vandoren reeds and mouthpieces.

 “We are thrilled to have Jenny joining us for this concert,” remarks Havely.  “She will be performing the classic "Concertino for Clarinet" by Carl Maria Von Weber with the band.  The band will also be playing traditional and operatic marches, Hollywood and Broadway favorites including selections from Les Miserables.”
