Athens State Hosting Henri’s Notions for St. Patrick’s Day Concert

Henri's Notion
ATHENS, Ala. – The Livingston Concert Lecture Series at Athens State University is sponsoring a free concert by Henri’s Notions, regarded as the South’s premier Celtic band. The concert will be held on Monday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center. The event is free and open to the public, no reservations are required.

From soft fingerpicked ballads to hard-driving jigs and reels, Henri's Notions creates a musical mix of traditional Celtic and American music as well as their own compositions that have a rhythm and voice reflective of their Southern heritage, which lends a pleasing familiarity to the music. The Notions draw from a broad palette of melodious sounds: the ardent sounds of fiddle, lilting flute, keen tin whistles, all played over the resonant tones and drive of the rhythm section, consisting of acoustic guitars, percussion, and bass.

Lead voices dance through the intricate embellishments that bring to life the old ballads and songs and all members lend voices frequently creating close, rich, well-balanced harmonies. The group makes a point to provide backgrounds on the songs and instruments used during their performance and this has allowed Henri's Notions to connect with, educate and inspire audiences for over twenty years!

Henri's Notions has toured extensively in the Southern and Eastern United Stated from West Palm Beach, Florida and Dallas, Texas to New York City. The group has worked countless festivals and concerts and has appeared with such folk icons as Bob Dylan, Richie Havens, The Kingston Trio, David Grisman Quintet and top Celtic acts such as The Tannahill Weavers, Patrick Street, Paddy O'Brien, Brian McNeill and others.

Henri’s Notions performs year-round in concerts, festivals, special events, and school programs. As a touring member of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Southern Arts Federation, grants are often available to eligible presenters.

with Athens Ties

ATHENS, Ala. – Athens State University will be hosting Jay Livingston, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Bank of America, at a lecture on Thursday, March 14th.  The 7:00 p.m. event will be held in the ballroom of the Sandridge Student Center and is offered free to the public through its sponsorship by the Livingston Concert Lecture Series.

Livingston, originally from Knoxville but now residing in New York, has been associated with Bank of America for eighteen years.  He has held senior roles in almost every functional area of marketing including product management, advertising, e:commerce and retail marketing. He has also led the introduction of the Bank of America brand in many markets across the country after large acquisitions. Livingston currently leads Bank of America's efforts to localize many of its nationwide marketing and philanthropic activities.

Livingston will speak on his connection to the Athens area and will give an overview of his background and career path.  He will also touch upon the current financial crisis and the future of banking as well as a discussion on start-up projects he was involved in developing.

“Jay’s topics will be sage advice for our students in the College of Business,” states Rick Mould, Vice President for Advancement.  “In fact, his suggestions for advancing in one’s career should have a broad, interdisciplinary message for all of our students as well as for the community.”

Livingston has many family connections to Athens as he is the great-grandson of Amos and Mamie Christopher.

“I’m excited to come back to Athens, a place where I have a lot of family and spent a lot of time growing up,” states Livingston. “Despite living in the middle of New York City, a small southern town always feels like home.”

Acclaimed Theater Artistic Director to Speak at Athens State University

ATHENS, Ala. - ATHENS, Ala. - Richard Rose, the acclaimed Artistic Director of the Barter Theatre, will be a featured speaker for the Livingston Concert-Lecture Series at Athens State University on February 28 at 7:30 pm in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.  The Barter Theatre of Abingdon, Virginia is one of the oldest and most unique regional theaters in the United States and helped launched the careers of many great stars, including Gregory Peck, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, and Kevin Spacey.  Rose will speak on the importance of regional theater and its role in community development and the creative economy, using the Barter Theatre as an example.  The event is free and open to the public.

Founded in 1933 in the middle of the Great Depression in a small and lovely town of Abington located just a few miles from the Tennessee border, the Barter Theater took its name from the price of admission—40 cents or the equivalent in goods. This “barter arrangement” allowed the local community of farmers and laborers their first experience of professional theatre.  As the third ever Artistic Director the Barter Theatre, Rose has directed, choreographed, and written over 135 shows to the delight of the Theatre’s patrons and regional audience.  During his tenure, Rose has also renovated and expanded the historic Barter Theatre, founded the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights, premiered new plays, promoted folk arts in the area for audiences from all over America to a green and lovely little town of Abington, VA.  After two decades under his dynamic leadership, he has expanded the number of visitors to his Barter Theatre for its year-round slate of plays seen by over 160,000 patrons per year.  Please join us in welcoming this inspirational artist and patron of Theatre to Athens State University and Northern Alabama community.
