CALHOUN ANNOUNCES STUDENT TEXTING and DRIVING CAMPAIGN

Members of the Student Government Association at Calhoun Community College today kick-off a partnership with students from Alabama A&M University and the University of Alabama at Huntsville in a joint campaign to publicize the hazards of texting and driving.

According to Kelly Hovater, student activities facilitator at Calhoun, among the specific actitivies students at Calhoun have planned is a poster contest on the theme “Say NO to Texting and Driving".  Students at both the Decatur and Huntsville campuses of Calhoun are eligible to participate.  “We encourage all of our students to take part in this very important and very timely project.  Our hope is to bring more awareness among our students on this very dangerous and serious issue,” commented Hovater.

“Poster submissions will be judged during our Spring Fest activities at each campus in April.  And, as an added incentive, cash prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place winners (1st - $150; 2nd-$100; and 3rd - $50),” added Hovater.  According to contest information, students are only allowed to enter their poster one time on the campus where the majority of their classes are taken.  Winning posters will then be displayed in the student center on each campus, and students will be asked to sign a pledge against texting and driving on the posters.

Hovater adds that the Calhoun students plan to visit area high schools and to speak to students enrolled in the college’s Orientation classes as an additional means of getting the message out.  “Our ultimate goal for the “Say NO to Texting and Driving” campaign is to inform as many students as possible about the extreme dangers and serious consequences of texting and driving and to hopefully decrease the number of accidents related to this behavior,” Hovater said.

For more information, contact Calhoun’s Student Activities office at 256-306-2640 or the Dean ofStudent Affairs Office at 256-306-2614.
