Athens State Student Groups Host Rescue Pet Benefit

ATHENS, AL – Athens State University’s chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) conducted an Animal Rescue Supply Drive for the Madison Animal Rescue Foundation (MARF) and Peace, Love and Animals (PLA) in conjunction with Athens State Student Government Association’s (SGA) Prancing Paws Carnival on April 26^th.

The SGA event helped the organizations raise over $1,400 with $500 donated from Jack’s restaurant, $500 from the Athens State Alumni Association and $400 from IMA and individual donations. The event brought over 200 animal enthusiasts to campus to bring awareness to the need for loving animal rescue homes. There was an animal obstacle course and free refreshments for two-legged and four-legged attendees.

MARF and PLA provide care, comfort, and spaying/neutering services for lost and deserted animals. They also provide foster homes who feed and shelter animals until a home can be found.
Bailey Gregory, the 2013-2014 SGA Vice President, said she was “so happy for the turnout.” The SGA officers and members worked very hard to coordinate the efforts on campus to benefit both organizations.

“PLA and MARF were in awe of the generosity on campus and so grateful for everything,” states IMA advisor Stacie Hughes. “An SUV was filled twice with all the donations received from students, faculty and staff.”

Athens State to Serve as Sponsor for Upcoming Leadership Event 

ATHENS, Ala. - The Decatur Morgan County Entrepreneurial Center will host Leadercast North Alabama at the auditorium of Decatur Baptist Church located at 2527 Danville Rd SW in Decatur, AL on May 9, 2014 from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. Athens State University is a sponsor of this leadership event.

“We are pleased that Athens State can be a part of this important event,” states Athens State Assistant Professor of Accounting and Decatur Morgan County Entrepreneurial Center advisory board member John Berzett. “Our students are trained to be leaders and we recognize the important role it plays in the business communities we reach.”

Organized as a leadership retreat featuring several well-known and inspirational leaders, Leadercast North Alabama exists to positively change the way the world thinks about leadership. Athens State Education Professor Recognized for Course Development

ATHENS, Ala. - Athens State University Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Development Darlene Turner-White was recently awarded the 2014 Blackboard Catalyst Award for Exemplary Courses for the development of her Professional Education Communication class. Turner-White joins a select group of educators and course designers from around the world whose courses have earned the Exemplary Course designation.

The Blackboard Catalyst Awards program annually recognizes and honors innovation and excellence in the Blackboard global community of practice, where teachers and learners work every day to redefine what is possible when leveraging technology.

“Dr. Turner-White’s work to develop this integral course is exceptional,” states Athens State President Bob Glenn. “I am pleased that it has been recognized by the Blackboard Corporation as a model for other schools to follow.”

Turner-White will be acknowledged for her achievement at Blackboard’s annual conference that will take place in Las Vegas in July.

“Our College of Education has a long history of preparing excellent teachers,” states Athens State Provost Dr. Ronald R. Cromwell. “This requires courses that have high standards and ensure students learn the best researched theories and practices. This includes learning through technology that is fast shaping the educational world. I congratulate Dr. Turner-white on her efforts to provide an exceptional course to our students that models very good distance learning practices.”
